Medical assistants help the physician in performing both administrative and clinical responsibilities. These medical assistants work in clinics, hospitals, doctors offices and makes sure that all operations are efficient and smooth. Usually the job description of medical assistants differs from one office to another. Some make perform laboratory works while others may be responsible for keeping medical records, answering phones, scheduling appointments and so on. Most medical assistants work in private clinics. But their task also depends on the laws of the state.
Others may help the doctors in examining and treating patients. They may weigh the patient and check the height, make sure all vital signs from temperature to blood pressure are taken. They also take the patient medical history and take some simple laboratory tests and procedures. Medical assistants also make certain that all questions of the patient regarding home medications and treatments have been answered. Medical assistants may complete either a one year or two year program. But prior to admission on trainings, having a high school diploma is a must since this will prove that the person has taken prerequisite subjects like biology, mathematics, computer, health, and the like. Medical assistant education is offered in vocational schools or colleges. A post secondary program will be completed for a year and will result in having a certification while a two year program will give a person an associate degree. These courses includes in their curriculum subjects like anatomy, medical terminology, transcription, dealing with insurances and etc. The students also learn different laboratory methods, clinical procedures, medication administration and first aid. Subjects in medical laws and ethics are also being taught to keep the person aware on certain rules needed to be followed and to know what is right and what is wrong. Formal training is not a requirement for medical assistants. It is also better for a person to have a volunteer experiences in the field since this will gain confidence and will widen the scope of things that you will learn. Certification is not a requirement but having one will indicate that the person has all the skills and knowledge needed to become a medical assistant. Having a certification will also identify an experienced assistant from the new ones that may lead to salary increase or job opportunities.
The medical assistant’s salary depends on the level of expertise and also the working experience. Employers will likely prefer applicants who know what to do so that they will not put most of their time training them. Those who have the skills and at least two years of working experience will be compensated more. A medical assistant can earn an average of $30,000 a year. This salary may also range from $27,000 to $35,000 yearly but a lot of factors can still affect these numbers. Promotions may also make a person’s salary higher up to $45,000 to $50,000.
