EKG Technician Careers are Doorways to Success
EKG technician careers are focused on doing a series of tests on patients. EKG technicians are cardiovascular specialists who can trace electrical impulses in the heart. They do this by connecting electrodes to a patient’s chest, arms and legs and they attach the leads to an EKG machine that can read the impulses. They print out a copy of this reading for the physician’s analysis. This test is commonly done before surgery, especially for patients who are middle-aged and those who have a history of cardiovascular disorders.
EKG technicians are trained to diagnose and treat heart or cardiac problems. They also aid in blood vessel or peripheral vascular ailments. And because their job is focused on the heart, they are also called cardiovascular technicians. They are responsible in preparing the room for EKG tests as well as cleaning it up after the tests are done. They also explain the procedures to the patients but they are not allowed to discuss the results in any way. They should consult a doctor or physician if ever they should find a problem.
They take good care of the devices and equipment and make sure that these are ready for the next series of tests. Some of their duties are scheduling test appointments, observing a patient’s heart rate and reviewing the doctor’s diagnosis of the patient’s condition. They also make use of the electrograph to record the electromotive variations in the patient’s heart impulses. They refill the paper and ink supply for the EKG machine and they also see to it that the equipment is in good operating condition.
An EKG technician should have a basic knowledge about heart ailments. They should be able to perform various tests to diagnose and detect any heart problems. EKG technicians should be able to produce informative reading results for the doctor’s analysis. They should be able to work in a complex environment and establish a good relationship with their co-workers and the patients.
To be a certified EKG technician, one must finish a two to four year program course and do hands-on trainings. And for those who want to have specialized training, like cardiac sonographers, they are required to finish a two year community college program. The first year consists of the core subjects and the second year will be focused on the training for their chosen area of practice – noninvasive vascular, invasive or noninvasive cardiovascular technology. Certified health care professionals who also want to obtain an education on cardiovascular technology should only complete the second year of training.
The two types of certification that one must undergo to be an EKG technician are Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). The average annual salary of an EKG technician ranges from $41,000 to $30,000. It depends on ones skills and employer. Working in facilities outside the hospital will give you a higher salary. It is always a plus if they have specialized in a specific field. Living in time of crisis makes it important for everyone to earn as much money as one can. EKG technician careers are opening doors of opportunities and possibilities for anyone who is hard working and motivated.
